Above Water by JudgeOfDeath Above Water by JudgeOfDeath
TOTAL HOURS: approx. 16.5 hours
TOOLS: Pencil, Tablet, Photoshop

Haven't done a digital painting in a long time. I had the pencil sketch for this finished during my break, after reading an article on mermaids and how artists depict them. This one hints on the absence of belonging... being a mix of fish, human and bird. Also, some of you may notice a change in my "signature"... the old one was getting a bit boring and I've been wanting to have something different. It came from a bunch of old random doodles of symbols.

btw, are mermaids a bit of birds, too? I always thought they were human-fishes.

My general view of mermaids is that they are human-fishes as well. But I've decided to do something different here.

I see. Damn, I am drawing a phoenix - mermaid - girl for a contest, and I thought I was soooo original... :cries:

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not the first person to come up with a mermaid that is a combination of human, fish and bird. A phoenix mermaid sounds very interesting! I hope you will post it here?

yes! I've been working on it since March 2nd.

I'm almost there now, though. I want to get done with it in a couple of weeks so I can submit a painted version to the contest as well as the pencil version. It's crazy, really. I never drew water or fire, and suddenly I decided to do both in a single drawing. Meh, challenge is fun.

anyway, if you want to give it a shot, here is the link to the contest: [link]

I look forward to seeing the painted and pencil versions. Thanks for the link but unfortunately I've been way too busy lately and don't have extra time for side projects at the moment.

All the best to you on the contest :)

wow, Judge this is amazing! The conflict is really breath-taking, yet it looks so natural like being everything if only part of something. Awesome blend of colors and emotion  Twwwooo thumbs up

Aw thanks CM :D, I've been doing pretty good, mostly glad that I have a bit of time to paint, haha. Hope you're doing well also! The toughest part for this piece was getting the colors right. I wanted the green, but had trouble blending the skin in, so that took a bit longer than usual. I'm glad you like it, and thanks for the fave!

I'm glad too :highfive:
I love the blending, it looks natural. One thing I always wondered is do mermaid have gills or do they breathe oxygen?

Hm, not sure, people interpret them differently. Mine's suppose to breath through her skin and is similar to a mudskipper (type of amphibious fish) that can go on land. So she can't stray too off the water as she needs to keep her skin wet to breathe.

that makes sense since the skin absorbs the majority of particles it comes in contact with  I was never sure since the Little Mermaid never had gills but those on Harry Potter and that book I read that I can't recall the name of at the moment had gills

Oh yeah, I've been fine. I saw you post in Kip's journal recently and was wondering how you've been as well. Glad to see you're doing some new (and cool) art! I loved your mermaid, I never really cared for the half human, half fish depiction as the image ALWAYS raises a unique suspicion of their origins. ;)

Glad to hear you're doing good. Being away from the computer felt great, but after coming back, I had tons of stuff to do and messages to return. I'm really happy you like this piece :D

Yeah, it does. I saw my last painting before I did this recent one and realized I haven't done anything for six months. And thanks, I'm working on some thumbnail sketches and will see if I want to develop them further.

It's been awhile for me too, although I'm getting back in the groove. The major distraction now is the weather - we've been experiencing 100°F+ temperatures lately. I usually paint on the back porch where my big compressor is located.

That's good to hear. I know what you mean about the heat (although 100°F is way too hot!!) I can't be on the computer when it's really hot (but most of the time I have to.) I'm usually in a small room with at least 4 computers so it's like a sauna even with a few fans on.

I don't think you realize how talented you are. I love this. She seems to be in motion. The water seems to be flowing off of her body naturally due to the force of her movement. Again, your atmosphere and background is so well done. If I could give this more than a fave, I would.
